The Colon Cleansing Controversy

By Cindy Papp | April 19, 2010

Colon cleansing is as old as herbal therapies. It has survived for thousands of years in spite of modern-day medicine. Why is this so? It is the latest craze of weight loss, an extreme idea put out by health nuts, or can it be a real choice in a healthier lifestyle?

Advocates of colon cleansing claim they enjoy many health benefits. These include; weight loss, healthier looking, glowing skin and even disease prevention. Some claim that a cleansing diet can help your body get rid of accumulated environmental toxins associated with disease. Then others say we have to use colon cleansing supplements in order to receive the true benefits.

Skeptics of colon cleansing claim it is dangerous. Some say it can cause comas or even death. Other skeptics claim that anyone trying to sell colon cleansing supplements are only in it for the money.

With all the controversy, what are we to believe? Could colon cleansing and its proponents be demons in disguise trying to dupe you out of your money? Or it is the cure that we need? Before we make a decision, we should start by researching the facts.

Environmental Toxins: Is it Time to for a Colon Cleanse?

Since skeptics claim that colon cleansing sellers are scamming people for money, we must first examine the most accepted treatment. In most cases, this would be pharmaceuticals. The makers of these drugs make billions of dollars of profit every year. In fact, they can make a billion dollars only to have the drug-in-question pulled from the market because the side-effect turned out to be death.

Add to this that in 1997, a Dr. Leape reported that a poll conducted by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), which is sponsored by the American Medical Association, found that more than 100 million Americans have been impacted directly and indirectly by a medical mistake. No deaths have been attributed to colon cleansing.

If you research colon cleansing facts, you will first find the controversy within the field. There are professionals who claim you need colonics and some claim that you only need the supplements. Other say you must change your diet and others say you don’t. And still no one seems to agree if you are cleansing or detoxing.

This diversity happens to be another basis for the skeptics to claim their hoax theory, which seems to be valid when you consider some of the top colon cleansing websites. For example, one website gives you step-by-step instructions of how to cleanse. The first step happens to be, “Order a 3 Month Supply” of the supplement they make commission from. With “information” like this, no wonder the skeptics abound!

Looking at the other side of the coin, colon cleansing is not illegal, involves no drugs and does not have a track record of killing people. It has survived thousands of years being in use by people who still claim it’s health benefits.

Old wives tales such as chicken soup for colds, peppermint for nausea and even certain nutrients to stop arthritis pain are panning out. Studies are finding these are not tales at all. Science if finding nutrition to be a viable treatment for many ailments while at the same time finding our blood contains hundreds of environmental toxins.

By weighing the above findings, I feel that the evidence for colon cleansing is strong considering nutrition is valid and there is strong evidence our body needs help eliminating toxins. It seems there is a good chance it is a valid tool to stay healthy.
